Maine Coast 10 Day Expeditions
Ages 15-19
The Experience will give students the chance to paddle the entirety of the Maine coast in four 10 Day expeditions or divide the trip over a few summers . Students should be at least 15 years of age, and feel very confident in their sea kayaking skills. The course focuses on refining skill sets in paddle technique and navigation, backcountry camping and cooking, basic first aid and emergency protocol, Leave No Trace backcountry ethics, and on the water communication. Students will prepare their own backcountry meals and engage in service projects in island communities, and will come away with a new awareness of the unique ecosystem known as the Gulf of Maine.
Leg 1: Casco Bay to Sheepscot Bay Summer 2007
Leg 2: Sheepscot Bay to Penobscot Bay Summer 2007
Leg 3: Penobscot Bay to Frenchman Bay Summer 2008
Leg 4: Schoodic Point to Machias Bay Summer 2008
At the completion of the entire coast of Maine paddle, all students will receive the coveted Black Paddle Award.

Ages 13-19
Note: Students should attend a minimum of one weeks of Cow Island programming before participating on the 5 Day Expedition! (Exceptions may apply to students with very good kayaking skills)
The 5 Day Expedition will allow students to start the Maine coast paddle, while they prepare themselves to be independent paddlers and outdoors people. The course focuses on refining skill sets in paddle technique and navigation, backcountry camping and cooking, basic first aid and emergency protocol, Leave No Trace backcountry ethics, and on the water communication. Students will explore the islands of Mid-Coast Maine. They will pack all of their belongings into their sea kayaks, including shared food and water for the group, returning on Friday to Cow Island for the return trip to Portland.
