Cow Island Conservation Project Internship Summer 2008
The Cow Island Conservation Corps (CICC) is a paid internship for high school age students (15 yrs. old to graduating seniors) that is dedicated to the preservation and management of Cow Island's natural resources. Utilizing techniques in bio mapping, forestry management, trail maintenance, and organic gardening, the CICC will help Rippleffect refine the master use plan for its 26 acre island educational outpost in Casco Bay.
The CICC internship accepts 8 students each year. We accept applicants on a first come, first served basis. The CICC internship runs from Monday to Friday every week during the summer. Students spend the night on the island Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Fridays are field trip days off island to destinations such as Pineland Farms or the Portland wastewater treatment plant. Interns receive a training stipend of $25/day for a total weekly stipend of $125. In addition to this stipend, interns will have the opportunity to become certified in first aid and CPR, and will be prepared to take the Maine State Trip Leader certification test.
The 2008 CICC internship begins Monday, June 30 and ends Friday, August 22. Interns are expected to make a minimum six week commitment. The first two weeks are mandatory for participation. The CICC internship provides excellent experience for resumes and college applications. Students who have already completed a CICC internship are welcome to apply for Ft. Lyon, but may not participate in CICC for a second year.

CICC Duties Will Include:
- Working with Rippleffect's organic gardener to learn about organic techniques and manage the Cow Island garden.
- Maintain and enhance existing island trails in order to provide safe, poison ivy free access to all parts of the island.
- Utilize the data gathered through bio mapping to create a plan that defines the areas of the island to be used for recreation and education and those that are strictly areas of conservation.
- Maintain the island composting toilet systems.
- Working closely with CICC naturalist to ensure that the information gathered is being appropriately documented and disseminated.
Fort Lyon Vocational Internship

The Fort Lyon internship is a paid work experience that supports Rippleffect's weekend adult programs. Interns will be trained across three particular areas: outdoor education, hospitality and eco-tourism. In addition to training days, the internship will offer real-life hands-on experience as students assist with food service, staffing and hospitality for adult programs.
The Fort Lyon internship accepts 11 students each year. We accept applicants on a first come, first served basis. The Ft. Lyon internship runs from Thursday to Monday every week during the summer. Students spend the night on the island Friday and Sunday nights. Lunch is provided every day, and dinner and breakfast are provided for overnights. Interns receive a training stipend of $25/day on training days, and minimum wage on weekend days during adult programming. Ft. Lyon total weekly income is approximately $187. In addition to this stipend, interns will have the opportunity to become certified in first aid and CPR, and will be prepared to take the Maine State Trip Leader certification test.
