Beyond Sustainability Faculty Bios

Dave Jacke, primary author of the award winning two-volume book Edible
Forest Gardens, has been a student of ecology and design since the 1970s,
and has run his own design firm—Dynamics Ecological Design—since 1984.
Dave is an engaging and passionate teacher of ecological design and
Permaculture and a meticulous designer. He has consulted on, designed,
built, and planted landscapes, homes, farms, and communities in the many parts
of the United States,
as well as overseas, but mainly in the Northeast. A cofounder of Land
Trust at Gap Mountain
in Jaffrey, NH, he homesteaded there for a number of
years. He holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies from Simon's Rock College
and a M.A. in Landscape Design from the Conway School of Landscape Design.

Lisa Fernandes is the organizer and founding member of the Portland Maine Permaculture Meetup and has been a student of permaculture and green building since 1992. She is a certified team trainer and group facilitator and owned a training & consulting business for several years. She studied political science at Boston College and environmental history at The Evergreen State College before working on municipal waste reduction & recycling programs (with a focus on organic waste recycling). Lisa is also a gardener, certified Master Composter and has studied medicinal plants for nearly twenty years. She has worked in the public, private and non-profit sectors and currently brings her varied experience to offering permaculture training and creating permaculture designs for selected clients. She currently serves on the Cape Farm Alliance and lives in Cape Elizabeth with her family.

Roger Dorian is an advocate for local, sustainable, and pleasurable foods. He works for the Eat Local Foods Coalition of Maine and is founder and president of Kitchen Gardeners International, a nonprofit network of 2600 individuals from over 50 countries who are working together to bring the delicious revolution into the backyards and kitchens of all. He lives, cooks, and gardens with his family in Scarborough.
