Cow Island Values

Cow Island Values are based on the Leave No Trace Principles (LNT) as defined by our partners at the Maine Island Trail Association. Cow Island is the second island on the trail, and as such it is our hope that you will take the time to care for the island as we do.

In addition to the basic good ethics of LNT techniques, we try to share in the Six Pillars of Character created by the Josephson Institute. These six core ethical values help guide our judgement as we model behavior for our youth & adult participants:

Trustworthiness
Be honest-Don't deceive, cheat, or steal-Be Rreliable-do what you say you'll do-Use good manners, not bad language-Be considerate of the feelings of others-Don't threaten, hit, or hurt anyone intentionally-Deal peacefully with anger, insults, and disagreements

Responsibility
Do what you are supposed to do-Persevere: keep on trying!-Always do your best-Use self-control-Be self-disciplined-Think before you act-(Consider the consequences)-Be accountable for your choices

Respect
The Golden Rule — do unto others as you would have them do unto you — nicely illustrates the Pillar of respect. Respect prohibits violence, humiliation, manipulation and exploitation. It reflects notions such as civility, courtesy, decency, dignity, autonomy, tolerance and acceptance

Fairness
Play by the rules-Take turns and share-Be open-minded; listen to others-Don't take advantage of others-Don't blame others carelessly

Caring
Be kind-Be compassionate and show you care-Express gratitude-Forgive others-Help people in need

Citizenship
Do your share to make you school and community better-Cooperate-Get involved in community affairs-Stay informed; Vote!-Be a good neighbor-Obey laws and rules-Respect leaders-Protect the environment
